Oil Analysis

Monitor lubricant health to reduce wear, prevent breakdowns, and cut costs.

What is it?

Oil Analysis

Oil Analysis is a proactive maintenance technique that looks at the condition of both the lubricant and the machine it protects. By sampling and testing oil from gearboxes, hydraulics, turbines, or compressors, we can uncover hidden issues such as wear, contamination, or oil breakdown long before they cause failures.

What We Look For

Our oil analysis service uses a range of proven techniques to build a complete picture of machine health:

Viscosity
Viscosity is the measure of an oil’s resistance to flow, essentially how thick or thin it is.
Kinematic Viscosity
We test the kinematic viscosity at 40°C and 100°C to ensure the oil meets its ISO grade. This is important because changes in viscosity indicate issues like fuel dilution, oxidation, or contamination, all of which reduce the oil’s ability to protect moving parts.
Wear Metals
Wear metals are microscopic particles that come from the slow erosion of bearings, gears, and other machine components.
Spectrometric Analysis
We use spectrometric analysis to measure trace metals such as iron, copper, aluminum, and chromium. The type and concentration of these metals show which machine components are wearing and whether the wear is normal or a sign of developing faults.
Contaminants
Contaminants like dust, dirt, coolant, and fuel dilution accelerate wear and reduce oil life.
FTIR & PQ Index
We test for contaminants such as dirt, dust, fuel, and coolant that may have entered the oil. These reduce lubrication quality and accelerate wear, often pointing to seal problems, poor filtration, or external ingress.
Water Content
We use precise methods to detect even small amounts of water, which can cause corrosion, rust, and additive depletion.
Karl Fischer & Crackle Test
We measure water levels in oil using methods such as Karl Fischer titration and the crackle test. Even small amounts of water can cause corrosion, rust, and additive depletion, making early detection critical to protecting equipment.
Spectrometric Analysis
Lubricants rely on additives to prevent oxidation, reduce wear, and improve performance. Over time, these deplete.
Additive Depletion Analysis
We use spectrometric analysis to measure additive elements such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, and phosphorus. Tracking these levels shows whether the oil’s protective additives are still effective or have depleted, which is critical for knowing if the lubricant can continue to protect your assets.
Particle Count
Clean oil is vital for machine health. Particle counting reveals how many solid particles are present and whether oil cleanliness meets standards.
ISO 4406
We carry out an ISO 4406 particle count to measure the size and number of solid particles suspended in the oil. High particle levels can indicate contamination, poor filtration, or ongoing wear, and directly affect equipment reliability.
